“It’s time for change”, says Labour’s new parliamentary candidate for Old Bexley and Sidcup
The Labour Party  officially launched its election campaign to elect a Labour MP in Old Bexley and Sidcup on Saturday 8th June, ahead the general election on Thursday 4 July.
Edward Jones, who lives in South East London, has been selected to stand as Labour’s candidate in the Conservative-held seat. In his day job, Jones works for the NHS. He previously stood for Labour in Mottingham, Coldharbour and New Eltham in the 2022 local elections.
In the 2021 by-election, the Conservative majority in Old Bexley and Sidcup was slashed in half. Barely 4,000 votes separated Labour and the Conservatives. Now, with newly drawn boundaries more favourable to Labour, pollsters suggest Labour could be on the verge of winning the seat for the first time.
Speaking at Labour’s official campaign launch in Sidcup on Saturday, Edward Jones said:
“I’m honoured to be Labour’s candidate to be the next Member of Parliament for Old Bexley and Sidcup. After 14 years of decline under the Tories, it’s time for change – in Bexley and across Britain.
I am proud to work for the NHS. But after 14 years of Tory neglect, our healthcare system is too often not there when it’s needed. The longer the Conservatives are in power, the longer patients will wait. I meet so many local people who tell me they don’t think their children will have the same opportunities they had. Is it any wonder, when schools across Bexley have suffered £21 million of cuts under the Tories.
As your MP, I’ll work tirelessly to cut NHS waiting times and get investment in our local schools.  I’ll make sure I’m always available to meet with and represent local residents, putting Bexley first.”
Notes to editors:
If elected on 4 July, Labour has set out six first steps to put the country back on track:
  1. Deliver economic stability with tough spending rules, so we can grow our economy and keep taxes, inflation and mortgages as low as possible.
  2. Cut NHS waiting times with 40,000 more evening and weekend appointments each week, paid for by cracking down on tax avoidance and non-doms.
  3. Launch a new Border Security Command with hundreds of new specialist investigators and counter-terror powers to smash criminal gangs and strengthen our borders.
  4. Set up Great British Energy, a publicly-owned clean power company, to cut bills for good and boost energy security, paid for by a windfall tax on oil and gas giants.
  5. Crack down on antisocial behaviour, with more neighbourhood police paid for by ending wasteful contracts, tough new penalties for offenders, and a new network of youth hubs.
  6. Recruit 6,500 new teachers in key subjects to set children up for life, work and the future, paid for by ending tax breaks for private schools
